Greek School

Another School year is about to begin at the Saint Demetrios Greek School. This is going to be an exciting year because new teaching methods and new programs are going to be introduced into our Greek School curriculum. The primary mission of our Greek School since its establishment more than forty years ago has been to teach our students the Greek language, and expose them to the Hellenic culture and traditions. When our school was established most of our students were able to converse in Greek and were seeking direction on ways to learn how to read and write the Greek language. Not so today. Our community has changed and we have to adapt both the scope and teaching methods of our Greek School program. Today, Greek is taught as a foreign language that requires commitment from our students as well as their parents. Our Greek School is a place where more than the language is taught. Our students are exposed to our glorious past and modern history and Greek geography. We expect our young students to participate in all ethnic celebrations such as OXI Day, Greek Independence Day and Greek Letters Day.

The Saint Demetrios Greek School offers classes to all age groups. Our classes are divided into pre-school, introductory, beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. We, at the Greek School, strive to give all our students the tools for mastering the Greek language and instill love and respect for our Hellenic heritage and culture. In an age when other ethnic groups in the United States are seeking to find their roots, and learning a second language has become important in our globalized world, we are very fortunate that our Greek School has the support of our Church and community. We have a beautiful heritage and the Greek language is one of the most important parts of our ancestor’s legacy. It is therefore our special responsibility to keep our Greek language and heritage alive.

Sincerely Dr. Mary Caravelis Greek School Director
